The August RRLug meeting had 15 people attending.  We met at the usual time of  6:30pm in the Rasmussen College Boardroom. There were a few new faces in the crowd tonight. As usual we had several different presentations on the agenda:

  • Ubuntu PPA System – Sam Williams  discussed the Ubuntu PPA ecosystem and provided some examples of how it could be used to improve your overall computer experience.
  • FinalTerm – working from the PPA discussion,  Sam  demonstrated how to install the alpha release of FinalTerm and then preceded to demonstrate some of the new features that could ultimate make this a very unique and useful terminal program. Again, it is alpha release so there are a number of features that need work, however.
  • Security 101 – We discussed some additional security tools and concerns that would make using Linux a bit safer. Hopefully, next month there will be a historic video presented to further illustrate some of these principles.
  • Current News – Towards the end of the meeting we discussed some of the more interesting Linux/FOSS news items from the past month.

It was a great meeting and everyone seemed to leave with just a little bit more information under their belts! Look forward to seeing you all at the September meeting!

The July RRLug meeting went really well. We had 12 people attending.  We met at the usual time of  6:30pm in the Rasmussen College Boardroom. There were a few new faces in the crowd tonight. As usual we had several different presentations tonight:

  • Python Training – Peter Hedlund completed his Python series with lecture #3 dealing with python functions and libraries. He provided some really good code examples with explanation. Peter and Sam also introduced a couple of reference sites:
  • Brief Discussion of Online Learning Resources – We added two additional resources to the list of sites that provide online programming tutorials. When you have an opportunity take a look at the following two sites:
  • ThumbDrive Mechanics Redux – Sam Williams revisited his discussion from December with a way to test USB drives prior to use without the need to reformat them first. During the presentation Sam presented a script that he wrote to perform the testing and took the opportunity to discuss bash programming mechanics and gotchas with this particular application.
  • Current News – Towards the end of the meeting Sam lead a discussion on some of the more interesting Linux/FOSS news items from the past month including the recent concerns over online privacy.

We all had a great time. Hope to see you all next month for the July meeting on: 08/08/13.
